Marshall County Hoopfest: Best 2027/28 Guards
BY:Justin Matcham

Jayden Cecil | Utah Prep | 2028 | Guard | 6’4

Cecil was one of the most impressive players throughout the weekend regardless of position or class. Has very good positional size and used his upper body strength to play through contact and get downhill as a driver. Showcased real touch around the rim with floaters and short jumpers, connected on jumpers from as deep as NBA range, and made good decisions as a passer and playmaker. His overall feel, size and skill all looked way ahead of the curve for a sophomore.

LJ Smith | Oak Hill | 2027 | Guard | 6’4

Smith is one of the best pure scorers in the country, and that ability was on full display. Created his own offense on all three levels of the floor and was efficient, was especially aggressive getting downhill as a driver. He’s naturally wired to score and looked to get his own shot off most of the time when he had the ball, but didn’t force bad shots and made a couple of plays as a passer.

Chase Lumpkin | McEachern | 2027 | Guard | 6’4

McEachern was a clear underdog as a team going against Link Academy, but Lumpkin stood out regardless with his ability to get to different spots on the floor and create offense. He has good size at 6’4 and some wiry strength that allowed him to play through contact, that and his creative handle allowed him to create separation even when defenders put extra pressure on him. Has real touch as a scorer, punished mismatches inside and was comfortable firing shot from as deep as the logo. Liked his activity on the offensive glass as well.

Zachary Graves | McEachern | 2027 | Guard | 5’11

Graves’ offensive explosion to end the first half kept McEachern in a game that looked to be trending towards a blowout early. Slightly undersized but with a strong feel, he did a great job of using his body to create separation to get his shot off on the perimeter, looked comfortable shooting off the catch and getting to pullups in rhythm. Proved to have deep range and was able to get into the paint off the dribble when defenders closed out too hard, showed some feel as a playmaker as well.

Myles Hayes | Woodward | 2028 | Guard | 6’4

Hayes’ size and versatility as an athlete allow him to be an impactful on both ends of the floor. Has a strong handle and an explosive first step as a driver, was able to hang in the air on finishes at the rim and shoot over defenders on pullups and turnarounds in and around the paint. Made quick decisions with the ball on the wing and passed up good shots for better ones on multiple occasions, has as high of a ceiling as anyone if he can build consistency in his all-around game.

Jarvis Hayes Jr. | Woodward | 2027 | Guard | 6’5

Hayes Jr. and his brother together make for a scary front line for opponents to go against. His size, length, and explosiveness as an athlete allow him to make plays all over the floor and match up with multiple positions defensively. Was active as a rebounder on both ends of the floor and looked good as a spot-up shooter, was also able to get into the midrange on short straight-line drives for pullups.

Davion Thompson | Link Academy | 2027 | Guard | 6’2

Thompson’s feel and fluidity with the ball in his hands are always quick to stand out whenever he’s on the floor. On a team with as many offensive weapons as Link, he started the majority of offensive possessions playing off of the ball but still found his way into earning MVP of the game through his hot perimeter shooting. Got a couple of open catch-and-shoot looks early to help get him into rhythm, then started to show more of what he can do off the dribble, getting to and connecting on contested pullups from beyond the high school line.
