Iowa’s 2025 class features a highly talented group of shooters. Across the state, there are a good number of players that can catch fire at any time from three or the midrange. Below are a group of players I’ve been able to watch that are among the leaders in three-point percentage and made three-point attempts in their class.
Dylan Marquart | 6’1 | G | Dunkerton | United As One
Marquart probably didn’t shoot the percentage he expected of himself at 34% from three on the year in 22-23 but he was still the 2025 leader in 3 point makes with 73 on the year. When the efficiency goes up, as I think it will, Marquart will have the opportunity to separate himself even further. In addition to his sharpshooting, Marquart is a talented driver and passer that shows impressive creativity and skill in those areas. The graduation of Casey Gardner and Preston Gillespie leaves a big scoring gap and Marquart looks set to step in to fill a large part of it.
Luke Hellige | 6’4 | W | Holy Trinity Catholic
Hellige had an excellent season in 22-23, not just as a shooter but all around. On threes, he was at 38.3% on 54 makes. A near 40% mark from the three-point line is really tough to do. In addition to the shooting from range, Hellige is a good passer, can get to the rim, and plays versatile defense for his team.
Mason Watkins | 6’1 | G | West Burlington | Martin Brothers
Watkins helped to lead West Burlington to a fantastic year alongside fellow guard 2024 Brady Martin. The two guards make for a dynamic duo that is tough to stop. From three, he was 41.5% and had 68 makes on the season. Able to get to spots off the dribble, get to the rim, and act as a playmaker passing in pick and roll or in the flow of the offense. Defensively, he forces a lot of turnovers and deflections with his quickness and good positioning.
Jalen Kirkpatrick | 6’6 | W | Grundy Center | Martin Brothers
Kirkpatrick is a high ceiling prospect with his height, length, and skill. He was hot from beyond the arc all season with Grundy Center, shooting 41.2% from three with 47 makes on the season. Particularly effective from the corners, Kirkpatrick is near automatic on catch and shoot opportunities. He was effective handles and good touch on the interior to make him a multi-level scoring threat. Adding strength and physicality will help him to take his game to the next level.
Jackson Lieurance | 6’2 | G | Cascade | DCBA
Lieurance is an impressive shot creator who can manufacture opportunities for himself off the dribble. From distance, the guard shot 40.7% with 46 makes on the year. Given that a decent amount of these looks came off the dribble, that over 40% rate is all the more impressive. When he is hot, he scores it with the best of them. Consistency will be the key to taking another leap as a junior.
Ephraim Hoefert | 6’7 | W | Central Lyon | Arena Basketball Club
Hoefert was the shooting specialist in the starting lineup for the state champion’s Central Lyon. He did his job very well, cashing in 38% of his three-point attempts with 45 makes on the season. With a growth spurt this Summer, his release is going to be even tougher to contest and looks at the rim may be easier to come by. With his team graduating some star seniors, look for Hoefert to take and make more attempts from both three and the field this year.
Toryn Severson | 6’4 | G | Madrid | All Iowa Attack
Severson has been a highly efficient scorer in both of his first two years with Madrid, combining high volume with high percentages. He was the leader in his team’s first trip to the state tournament last season, partly behind a 35.7% from the three-point line with 51 makes on the year. From what I’m seeing this summer, his three-point shooting is only getting better and better, with his range extending even further beyond the arc. With most of the starting lineup back this season, watch out for Madrid to be highly competitive yet again.
Etienne Higgins | 6’2 | G | Council Bluff Abraham Lincoln | SW Iowa Impact
Higgins had the hot hand from the corner in the handful of games I watched CBAL last season. He finished the year at 38% from three with 46 makes. A tough shot maker that isn’t afraid to step up in big moments, Higgins is someone you want to give the ball to when you need a good look. A very good athlete as well, Higgins can attack downhill, rebounds well, and plays very good defense.
Spencer Roeder | 6’4 | W | Bellevue Marquette
Roeder was a centerpiece of Marquette’s offensive attack in what ended as a very good 22-23 season. He had a 48.3% rate from three with 43 makes. When I watched him play live, what stood out beyond the shooting was his defense. Roeder played with an excellent motor and used his size and speed to cause chaos.
Payson Nietert | 6’5 | W | Linn-Mar | Martin Brothers
Nietert can make shots in bunches. Once he sees one go in, watch out for a handful more to follow quickly after. He has a bit of an unconventional release the goes behind his head a little. This actually ends of working in his favor, making his attempts harder to contest. Ending the 22-23 season at 39% from three with 51 makes, Nietert will look to keep building that number and take on a bigger offensive role.
